At 10.50 pm on 8 December 1980, Mark David Chapman fired five shots from close range, ending the extraordinary life of John Lennon.  The shooting took place in front of the building where Lennon lived.  One of the shots missed, but the other four struck him in the back and shoulder causing severe gunshot wounds.

Lennon was pronounced dead, some 31 minutes later, in the emergency room at the Roosevelt Hospital.  The news of his death sent shockwaves around the world.

John Lennon made an incredible mark on Rock and Roll, but is also remembered for his political activism and his contribution to world peace.

Lennon was born in Liverpool, England 9 October 1940.  Throughout his school years he was known as a “happy-go-lucky” pupil, but did not achieve very good grades.  He decided that he wanted to make music.

In 1957 he met Paul MacCartney and they started to write songs together.  They played in a band together with George Harrison, called the Quarrymen.  The band changed their name a few times until they decided on The Beatles.  Ringo Starr joined them in 1962.

In February 1963, the Beatles released their first album, “Please Please Me”.  Six and a half years later, in September 1969 Lennon left The Beatles.

In the next few years Lennon produced a number of albums with his wife Yoko Ono, much of it focussed on peace and anti war.  In 1971 he produced the “Imagine” album, and the title song went on to become the anthem for anti war movements.

Later in 1971 he left England for New York.  He continued to write and produce until 1977 when he announced his decision to devote all his time to his family.  He emerged from retirement in November 1980 releasing “Double Fantasy”.

One month later, John Lennon was dead.  Just hours before his death, he said on a radio interview that he felt safe anywhere in New York City.  Many years earlier he was asked how he might die and replied, “I will probably get popped off by some loony”.
